Should the Shea Tree be domesticated?

For generations, the shea tree has influenced the lives and means of subsistence of communities throughout Ghana and West Africa. One may say the shea tree is a symbol of resilience in the rural north. Shea butter has been used for its therapeutic qualities, aesthetic appeal, and cultural significance since the beginning of time. Traders from Ghana’s southern regions would travel for days, frequently on foot, to the north in search of this valuable golden butter long before the country was connected by modern infrastructure. Used as a body cream and healing balm, shea butter softened and protected the skin for generations, leaving behind a legacy of natural wellness that transcends time.

Today, the shea value chain looks markedly different. Technology and modern supply systems have eliminated the need for long treks. Consumers around the world can access premium shea products at the click of a button. Yet, despite this progress, the very tree that produces this cherished butter is under threat.

Ghana currently has one of the highest deforestation rates in Africa, and the shea tree, ironically valued for its high-quality charcoal, is increasingly being cut down. Each shea tree that is felled symbolizes both the potential extinction of an ancient species and the loss of priceless genetic characteristics. 

Is it time for us to begin the domestication of the shea tree?

For centuries, humans have modified and improved crops through domestication to better serve our consumption needs. Maize, for instance, has undergone massive transformation through selection, breeding, and technology from a wild grass to a global staple. Cocoa, cashew, and oil palm are all cultivated at scale, thanks to deliberate investment in domestication. Why not shea? Traditionally, shea trees grow wild across the savannah belt and take 25 to 30 years to mature and bear fruit. This lengthy maturation period has been one of the major barriers to cultivation. 

But science offers us hope. Worldwide, vegetative propagation methods have been used as a means for domesticating endangered and wild species, which will give a promising future to the shea industry. Through improved propagation techniques such as grafting, it is now possible to produce shea trees that begin fruiting in as little as five years. In addition to growing more quickly, these improved varieties can be chosen for desirable qualities like increased oil yield, resistance to disease, and drought tolerance. 

The implications of this are profound. If we can successfully cultivate improved shea plantations, we will secure a steady, sustainable supply of quality nuts and help reverse deforestation, restore degraded lands, and boost rural incomes. Such plantations could serve as biodiversity corridors, carbon sinks, and climate-resilient agroforestry systems that empower women and communities across the shea belt.

Investing in shea domestication is not without its challenges. It requires funding, research, skilled nursery management, and farmer education. It also requires a shift in mindset from viewing shea as a wild tree to be harvested to a valuable crop worth cultivating and protecting. 

If we do not act now, we risk losing more than trees. We risk losing the high-quality nuts we recognize the shea tree for, the great oil content of the nuts, the economic empowerment of rural women, and the biodiversity of our savannah landscapes. It’s possible that domestication is the only way to keep the shea tree alive and well in the future, rather than merely as a relic of the past.

The question is no longer  should we domesticate the shea tree? 

The real question is, will we be willing to do so at scale before it’s too late?
